The benchtop is the hardest-working surface in your home. It needs to look beautiful, handle heat, resist staining, and survive daily family life. Here's how the major materials stack up in real NZ conditions.

Engineered Stone (Silestone, Essastone)

By far the most popular choice in NZ renovations right now. Engineered stone offers consistent patterning, excellent durability, and is non-porous so it's naturally hygienic. Price range: $450–$900 per linear metre installed.

Natural Granite

Each slab is unique β€” the natural variation is beautiful. Granite is extremely heat-resistant and durable. The downside is it requires annual sealing to prevent staining. Price: $600–$1,200 per linear metre.

Laminate

Modern laminate has come a long way. Brands like Formica and Laminex now produce incredibly realistic stone and timber effects. For rental properties or budget renovations, laminate offers excellent value at $180–$350 per linear metre.
