Choosing Floor Tiles for NZ Bathrooms: A Practical Guide

The Slip Rating Is Non-Negotiable

In NZ, all bathroom floor tiles must comply with AS4586, the Australian/NZ standard for slip resistance. For domestic wet areas, a minimum P4 (or R11 DIN) rating is required. Do not accept tiles without a confirmed slip rating from your supplier — the rating is a legal requirement, not a preference.

Matte and textured finishes are generally safer than polished finishes in wet areas. Large-format polished marble looks extraordinary in a showroom; in a wet bathroom, it is a liability.

Size and Proportion

In small bathrooms (under 6m²), large-format tiles can feel overwhelming. Medium-format tiles (300×300 or 200×400mm) give better visual scale. In larger bathrooms, large-format tiles read as luxurious and minimise grout lines.

Grout Colour

Light grout in a wet area is beautiful for approximately three months, then requires regular cleaning and eventual replacement. Dark grout hides mildew and is dramatically more practical. Mid-tone grout — warm grey, linen — is the compromise that works well long-term.

Budget Reality

Supply-only tile costs in NZ range from $25/m² (basic porcelain) to $200+/m² (natural stone). Installation adds $60–$90/m² for standard tiles, more for mosaics or patterned tiles. Budget for 10% wastage on top of your calculated area.
